Why Sensory Play?

Why sensory play? Sensory play is open-ended, meaning there is no clearly defined outcome or “right way” of playing and exploring. A sensory bin can keep a child busy, but that’s not the main reason to use them. Sensory play provides opportunities for children to be successful, regardless of their language or abilities.

What’s the best part of sensory play? You may see them scooping, pouring, digging and burying, but what they are *actually* doing is quite magical. Sensory play provides opportunities for children to actively use their senses as they explore their world. These types of activities are crucial to brain development and help to build nerve connections in the brain’s pathways!

These connections will lead to your child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks, supports language development, gross and fine motor skills, social interaction, self control and problem solving skills.

The most important thing you can do is offer your child their sensory bins without an expectation of “how” they will play (this does not mean there are no rules). Allow your children to freely use their imaginations and creativity to make sense of the materials provided.
